Descent 3 is one of the few games with out-of-the-box support for all three major 3D graphics APIs: Direct3D, OpenGL, and Glide. All three renderers are usable, though OpenGL is typically best, especially on newer systems. Descent 3 is a demanding but scalable game, and should be playable on most Windows 98 and XP systems. Patch 1.4 is recommended for best results on all systems.
Descent 3 supports 32-bit color, but reverts to 16-bit color whenever the game restarts. This bug is fixed by a patched executable.
Because Descent 3 offers six degrees of freedom, its controls are slightly more complex than those of a typical first person shooter. A good control setup uses a slight modification of the standard ESDF / mouselook paradigm:
