Quake II

Quake II is an OpenGL game with a fallback software renderer. The software renderer is one of the most advanced ever developed, but is somewhat slow. In contrast, Quake II's OpenGL renderer is highly optimized and should be usable on most Windows 98 systems.
As with Quake, Quake II's source code was released under the GPL in 2001. However, because Quake II's original executable is more compatible with newer systems, fewer source ports have been developed, and most focus on graphical enhancements. Quake II is playable on nearly all Windows XP systems; patch 3.20 is recommended for best results.
Like most id Software games, Quake II has a developer console accessed with the tilde key (~). A few important console commands are listed below.
To run a command every time Quake II is launched, at it to C:\Quake2\baseq2\AutoExec.cfg using the following syntax:

- gl_round_down 0 - sharpens object textures
- gl_texturemode GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR - enables trilinear filtering
- gl_modulate 1.2 - makes dynamic lights brighter
- timedemo 1 - activates timedemo mode
- demomap demo1.dm2 - plays a short demo and returns the average FPS
