Need for Speed II SE
Need for Speed II SE is an updated version of Need for Speed II, released earlier in 1997. The Special Edition adds a new track, four new cars, three bonus cars, a new physics mode, and Glide support, making it one of the first games to use 3dfx's proprietary API. Need for Speed II SE is playable on most Windows 98 and XP systems when properly patched.
The Need for Speed II SE CD provides two executables. nfs2sen.exe is the software version of the game, which delivers acceptable performance and image quality. nf2sea.exe is the Glide version of the game. This adds many enhancements, including texture filtering, fog, weather effects, car reflections, improved smoke and dust effects, improved skybox rendering, transparent HUD elements, and a rotating pause screen. The Glide version lacks the software version's in-car camera, however.
The Glide version of Need for Speed II SE only installs automatically on early 3dfx systems. To use the Glide version on non-3dfx systems, first copy nfs2sea.exe from the CD to the game's installation folder, then install and configure a Glide wrapper. dgVoodoo is a good option for older systems, while nGlide is a better fit for DirectX 9 video cards.
Need for Speed II SE has several compatibility problems on newer systems. On systems with more than 512 MB of RAM, the game hangs on launch. On systems with larger hard drives (80+ GB), nfs2sea.exe displays the warning "Your hard drive has less than 1MB free space" and fails to save configuration data. On dual core systems, nfs2sen.exe crashes intermittently. All of these problems are fixed by unofficial patches.
Need for Speed II SE includes one bonus track and three bonus cars. These can be unlocked by completing the Tournament and Knockout game modes, respectively, or by entering the following codes at the main menu:
